About Us

The Mannered Mob is a Living History or Re-enactment society whose members are passionate about the history of the 18th century, and about sharing that passion and knowledge with the public.

The society began in the 1990s as a group who wanted to focus on portraying the civilian majority of the population of Britain, rather than the minority in the military, which is the primary focus of most re-enactment groups.

As the founding members of the group had previously taken part in re-enactment concerning the Jacobite Rebellion of c.1745, the mid-18th century became The Mannered Mob’s period of focus. The rapidly changing fashions of 18th century Britain make portraying the whole century awkward and expensive, however the group knowledge does cover earlier and later decades, and we are always happy to discuss and answer questions.

Between its members, The Mannered Mob has expertise in a broad range of aspects of civilian life. We can talk about and demonstrate a variety of artistic hobbies and pastimes enjoyed by the gentry, the roles and tasks of servants, rural labourers and the poor, discuss and demonstrate recipes and the preparation of food and drink, provide music, and even cover surgery and medicine of the period. We are also experts in fashion and dress, with all our clothing made to the highest standard of authenticity that we can achieve.

The group is not based in a single area of the UK, and can provide events nationwide. All our events are bespoke, so if you are interested in hiring us, please visit our FAQ page, or Contact Us to discuss your requirements, and we will be very pleased to work with you. Some examples of past events can be found on our Gallery page.

If you are interested in joining the group as a member, please visit our FAQ page, or Contact Us with any questions. We are always delighted to welcome new members, and no previous experience is necessary.
